5 ‘First Day of Work’ Outfits and What They Say About You

We’ve all been there, a new graduate anxiously waiting to find out you’ve finally landed your first job.

Then the day finally comes. You receive the call and instantly days of lounging on the couch and Netflix and chilling (it still counts if you’re by yourself) are behind you.

It’s now time to gear down and start functioning like a real member of society.

But as you scramble to get your life together before the big day, you realize you haven’t worn anything remotely professional-esque since you attended your older brother’s wedding five months ago.

You may think that since you’ve already landed the job, what you wear to work doesn’t really matter. But what you wear on your first day can really express who you are as an individual and speak to people as loudly (or as quietly) as you want.

So what person can you relate to and what person should you be…?

Here are five ‘first day’ styles and what they say about you:

The Polished Classic
You take the first day of work very seriously. And you want people to know you do. You show up an hour early and you’re definitely going to be the last person to leave (you hear that Kelly in marketing?). You arrive in a full suit with perfectly creased pants and you definitely spent your morning polishing your shoes and learning the names of all your coworkers. Your wardrobe consists of blazers, button up shirts, and trousers, and you always look effortlessly timeless in simple staple pieces. This reflects in your work ethic as well, as everything you do is on point. Mistakes, like kitten heels, are simply not in your wheelhouse.

The Brash Standout
You’re determined to stand out on your first day, even if it requires wearing an obnoxiously loud patterned shirt. You burst into the building like a bull in a china shop, letting your coworkers know that you’ve arrived – in all your blindingly loud colour. One thing you don’t lack is confidence, which can be seen from your bright shirt and perfectly coiffed hair.

The Minimalist
Your friends are constantly reminding you that you need to start wearing colour, but you always opt for black. You prefer monochrome, toned-down pieces that look clean and sharp. Your outfits say you mean business, which reflects in your serious work demeanour. Your favourite Insta filter is Inkwell, obviously.

The Mark Zuckerberg
No f-s are given with you. You’ll show up to your first day in a hoodie, jeans, and flip flops, even in December. Did you comb your hair this morning? Who knows. Your knowledge and skills outshine your lack of fashion sense. You can be mistaken for being lazy, but people will soon realize it’s not laziness that dresses you, it’s simply that you never stop working to bother with things like clothes.

The Trendsetter
You arrive looking as if you just stepped off the runway, leaving your coworkers questioning how a recent graduate can afford such nice clothes. You’re wearing the newest designer, boldest looks, and articles of clothing that were only released in Japan less than two days ago (seriously, who do you know?). You’re not afraid to experiment with your style or when it comes to putting some flair into new projects at work.
