3 Things For Calgarians

Being socially conscious is part in parcel to what we do as young professionals. In Calgary, Mayor Naheed Nenshi has challenged all Calgarians with the 3 Things initiative. This initiative is simple…

Think about 3 Things you can do to make Calgary better. These things could be for your street, your neighbourhood or for the entire city.
Do those 3 Things.
Encourage 3 more people to do the same.

The brainchild of The Mayor’s Civic Engagement Committee, 3 Things is committed to increasing civic engagement in Calgary. Defined, this means individual and collective actions designed to engage Calgarians to participate in municipal issues. They are committed to getting all Calgarians to contribute in 3 ways to making the city even better.

The theory is that if every Calgarian did at least 3 things for the city, there would be more than 3 million actions making Calgary an even better city. It’s up to each person to decide on what his or her 3 Things are. These things can be large scale, like organizing a fund raising event – who doesn’t need to get the organization they work for more actively involved in the community? – or it can be something small and simple. Ultimately, it’s about acknowledging that every action can make a difference.

Perhaps you have seen the Great Big 3 around the city. It is just that – an enormous three-dimensional 3. The next time you are hosting an event, why not consider having the Great Big 3 as part of the event? It is a bound to get YPs talking about what they can do to contribute to the city.

Join the group and get updates on activities, what others are doing and other neat things happening in Calgary. They also encourage you to share with people what you have done, tell people about it or blast it through your social media channels. Who knows, your act may inspire someone else to act.
