17 Things You Need to Know About Canadian Tennis Star Eugenie Bouchard

If you don’t already know the name – you will soon.

Eugenie is just about the biggest thing to hit Canadian sports since, well, hockey.

So beyond the basics – 5’10, from Montreal, only 20 years old (a Pisces, boys) – we thought we’d fill you in on a few more details before she takes the court on Saturday, July 5th to vie for the most prestigious title in all of tennis: Wimbledon.

She’s already won Wimbledon – 3 times.
She won the 2012 Wimbledon Championships junior event as well as the 2011 and 2012 junior doubles event.

She has a twin sister.
Beatrice, her fraternal twin, is a full 6 minutes older. She also has a younger sister Charlotte and a younger brother William.

She’s made the semifinals of the first three Grand Slams this year.
And that makes her the first WTA player to do so in 5 years. That’s right – not even Serena Williams has done that in the last half of the decade.

Her favourite players are Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova.
Which must have been kind of awkward for her when she played Sharapova in last month’s French Open semi-final. She lost in three hard fought sets.

She really likes Gangnam Style.
We’re going to go ahead and say a little too much.

She’s the first Canadian to EVER make it to a Grand Slam Final.
Male or female. This one pretty much speaks for itself.

She once appeared on CTV Montreal as a guest weather anchor.
‘Cause knowing which way the wind blows is an important factor in tennis.

She won her first professional main draw match at 15.
It was in Italy, and she defeated no. 798 Frederica Grazioso while you were probably still worrying about whether or not boys liked you.

She was named the WTA Newcomer of the Year in 2013.
The first Canadian in 30 years to win the award. From newcomer to finalist in one year ain’t half bad.

She loves a good selfie.
Seriously, her Facebook page is littered with them.

She’s mentally tough.
Asked what other job she might want to do if tennis didn’t work out she said, “Air traffic controller. I heard it’s such a high-stress job they can only do it for two years and then you have to stop before you get burnt out. For me, I love that – those high-stress, high-pressure situations. I enjoy those moments.” Wow.

She’s named after royalty.
Prince Andrew’s daughter to be exact: Princess Eugenie. In fact, all of her siblings are also named after someone in the British royal family.

She’s friends with Jim Parsons.
Aka Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory.

She’s maybe, kind-of, but definitely not for certain dating someone.
That someone? Alex Galchenyuk, the 20-year-old Montreal Canadiens player. Nothing’s been confirmed publicly but there has been a lot of Habs jersey wearing going on.

She’s aggressive.
She takes the ball early, stands inside the baseline on returns, and constantly pushes the tempo of the game. In fact, her game itself has been described as ‘hell’ to play against. Nice.

She has a sense of style.
All-whites you say, Wimbledon? How about a kimono instead.

She has her own army
#GenieArmy to be exact. And if you’re on social media you should definitely not provoke them.
