16 Films From Your Childhood You Will Never Get Sick of

They’re the type of movies you could watch over and over (and over) and never get sick of.

Ever.

Sure, Hollywood (and Hollywood North) has created some pretty notable work in our young adult lives, but certain childhood films will always hold a special place in our heart. Meaning, we’d never change the channel if we stumbled upon one of them when channel surfing.

Here are 16 films from our youth that will never get old…

1. Office Space (1999)
Not only do the jokes still make you LOL every time, you appreciate this film more and more now that you’re actually a part of the 9-5 (just kidding, that doesn’t exist – the 9-7) work grind. And you’ll never get sick of imitating Bill Lumbergh’s “yeah, hi.”

2. Dumb and Dumber (1994)
Dumb and Dumber’s the type of classic that you could probably re-enact scene-for-scene, word-for-word with a group of your closest friends if you happened to be so buzzed and ambitious. Though we will all see the upcoming sequel, we don’t think anything can compare to the original in terms of the re-watchable factor.

3. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off has remained a favourite before we were all even in high school ourselves. But then again, you could say that about any John Hughes film.

4. Zoolander (2001)
Not only do we watch Zoolander over and over, “Blue Steel” remains a popular pose of choice when doing a group shot at the end of the night (and subsequent #bluesteel Instagram post). Like the film, that will never get old either.

5. Clueless (1995)
Clueless is just as good now as it was back in junior high or elementary school. The fashion, the humour and the new dialogue it inspired that once flowed naturally from your own lips brings back a flood of nostalgic memories from a time you were so “clueless” yourself.

6. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is the one holiday film you could (and do) watch shamelessly throughout the year. Not only will it stop being funny, but it serves as reassurance that your family’s not so crazy after all.

7. Ghostbusters (1984)
From the theme song we all sang at recess to the action figures and comic books, it doesn’t get much more nostalgic than Ghostbusters (the original, that is). You still watch it for all the same reasons you did as a kid – and also to get a kick out of how different Bill Murray and Dan Ackroyed are now.

8. The Princess Bride (1987)
The Princess Bride is the type of classic fairy tale film that transports you to a warm fuzzy place when your imagination was limitless. And we all need to revisit that childhood place once in awhile. So we turn this on.

9. Forrest Gump (1994)
Forrest Gump is one of the first “serious” films we can remember connecting with as kids. Not only did it inspire hours of Forrest imitations, we could all somehow relate to the young characters in the film during Forrest’s childhood. When we watched it as we (finally) matured, we had a better understanding of Forrest when he too became an adult.

10. Dazed and Confused (1993)
Dazed and Confused intrigued us when we were young with its older, badass characters that got us both excited and terrified for high school. Now, the film holds a different meaning when we watch it, as we can reflect on our own hazy carefree high school and university times; you know, before it all got real. Plus, we could never get tired of the soundtrack.

11. The Lion King (1994)
Of all Disney movies, young professionals are perhaps most familiar with The Lion King and all of its music. It’s a safe bet to say that when you suggest it to entertain your niece and nephew, it’s just as much for your benefit. And you will be singing “Hakuna Matata” in the shower later.

12. Overboard (1987)
Overboard is good on so many levels – least of which is the fact that Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are still together today. But seriously, we’re not sure exactly why (maybe it’s the fact that it’s the first family-appropriate adult rom-com we ever saw), but it remains a favourite and one we young professionals can’t click away from on its frequent cable showings. At the 2012 Oscars, Reese Witherspoon even admitted that Overboard was her all-time favourite film.

13. The Goonies (1985)
The once sleepover staple The Goonies has a special place in the hearts of all young professionals – and that’s a fact. Not only do we want to watch it over again, it’s the kind of classic we want to one day share with our kids too.

14. Weekend at Bernie’s (1989)
Weekend at Bernie’s remains a lazy Sunday go-to to this day. And we’ve all had that friend at that one party or cottage weekend who indulges a little too much and needs to be propped up “Bernie-styles,” which cues a series of Weekend at Bernie’s references that make you want to see the film again the next day.

15. Star Wars (1977)
If there was a movie to expand the imagination and offer an appreciation into the magical world of sci-fi, it was Star Wars. Although the original is 37 years old and is set in space, it still has the same outlet for overly active imaginations as it did when you were a kid.

16. Indiana Jones
Any of the Indiana Jones films inspired hours of imaginative western cowboy play upon watching. Not to mention, yourself or your brother was definitely “Indie” himself for Halloween at least once. Plus, there was that Indiana Jones attraction at Disney World…so yeah, the films bring back some sweet nostalgic memories when we watch it now.

We have a feeling we know what you’ll be doing (and downloading) this weekend…
