15 Ways To Extend Your Summer in Toronto

The last week has given us a cool reminder as to just how fickle this season can be.

And while we do our fair share of complaining, we’d rather have construction all year round if it meant we never had to shovel again.

So, with less than two weeks left in August, we thought we’d hit you with a few ways to make sure you’re getting the most out of summer for as long as possible.

1. Take a Hike
Literally, not figuratively. Need some suggests? We got you.

2. Spend an afternoon at Sugar Beach
If you don’t have time to hit the island, plan an urban escape in the heart of downtown.

3. Catch a game of beach volleyball in Ashbridges Bay
What says summer more than getting some exercise in the sand? A beer and a swim afterwards, obviously.

4. Take a boat cruise at the Toronto Harbour
If you haven’t hit the water yet, a date night view of the skyline is something every summer needs. Even if that summer happens to be in September.

5. Enjoy a sunset drink on a patio
This would fall under the ‘beginner’s guide to summer’ category. Summer doesn’t end as long as you can enjoy a cocktail under the open sky.

6. Go for a bike ride around the city
We don’t mean ride to work. We mean hit a trail, find a path, or just get to know a neighbourhood you’ve never been to. Sometimes less is more, and in this case two wheels are better than four.

7. Take a ferry ride to one of the oldest landmarks in Toronto, the Island Lighthouse
Built more than 200 years ago, and the oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes, taking a day-trip out here will make you feel like summer can never end.

8. Take a walk on the wild side at Toronto’s clothing optional beach
Based on weather alone, you’re probably going to want to take advantage of this as quickly as possible. Otherwise you might get short-changed.

9. Learn to sail off Centre Island
Sun, sail, and open water. If you want to extend your summer, do it with a boom.

10. Check out the CNE
Need some reasons? No problem. There’s nothing more central to extending your summer in Toronto than a mouthful of cotton candy and a memorable interaction with some carnies.

11. Take a stroll through the historical Distillery District
In fact, do so August 29-September 1 and you’ll catch Artfest, one of Toronto’s favourite summer art shows. With 75 artists providing a range of jewelry, pottery, food, and live music, treading these cobblestones will make you forget all about fall.

12. Hit Up Buskerfest
Take to the roads for one of Ontario’s largest street performer festivals as well as one of the last major festivals in Toronto this summer. It’s outside, entertaining, and all in support of Epilepsy Canada.

13. Take on TIFF
Throw yourself into TIFF. Whether you’re simply hunting celebrities or actually checking out this year’s intro to Oscar favourites, spending some time in heels and an LBD (little black dress) will help keep you in season.

14. Train for the Night Race
Spending your evenings getting in shape for a 5k or 10k is one way to keep the feeling of summer alive and well. As an added bonus, it’ll likely you make you feel a lot better than keeping your patio dream alive every night of the week.

15. Catch a Blue Jays Game
We tell you about them every week, but seeing them in person is a whole other experience. With 13 home games in September alone, this is one of the best ways to ignore the shift in seasons.
