11 Ways Your Cell Phone Can Throw You Under the Bus

Smartphones, with their cameras, apps and practically limitless means of communication, are one of the best things to happen to us young professionals.

That’s a given.

But there are some ways that your trusted cell phone can mortify you more than your mother can after a few glasses of wine.

Yep, we’ve been there.

Here’s how that smartphone can throw you under the bus…

1. When your trusted alarm clock goes off at the worst time.
An alarm clock can embarrass you, especially when it goes off at 2pm on a Sunday while on a date, reminding you to take your birth control pill. Or during a client meeting on a Wednesday at 10am, set from the previous morning when that migraine sent you back to bed for a couple of hours before the commute.

2. When you text the wrong John or Jessica.
You really meant to text that sexy and charming one that you met last week at the club. Not the annoying, hot mess that won’t leave you alone. Next time learn to ask for last names.

3. When your friend scrolls too far through your pictures.
It isn’t a good idea to pass a friend your phone to check out the shots from the amazing event or concert the night before. They may stumble upon the three dozen seflie attempts it took to get that “effortless, makeup-free” shot you Instagrammed the day before. Or those racy shots for your significant other that you should have deleted upon Snapchatting.

4. When a personal text message pops up while showing a picture on the screen.
Isn’t it annoying that iPhone texts pop up for all to see? For example, while your phone lays on the dinner table or you’re showing your boss an important client email via your smartphone and your significant other sends you a message telling you all they want to do to you later that night…

5. When you accidentally like it.
Before we realized that tapping a picture twice on Instagram meant we liked it, we mortified ourselves by liking pictures of both our crushes and frenemies – some from months ago. At the same time, with one wrong touch of your screen you could easily like that Facebook status update from that friend you barely know letting the social media world know that their dog had died. Awkward.

6. When you didn’t actually hang up.
If you don’t double check that you did indeed hit end after leaving a voice message, your sarcastic comments and mocking of their voice message will be recorded. And there’s no saving yourself at that point.

7. When you walk into a pole or person.
With all the gossip, plan making, picture sharing and work that happens on your phone, it is easy to forget that there is a physical world around you. It happens to the best of us. At least a pole or person is (usually) better than stepping in gum, barf or dog shit.

8. When you pocket dial your boss.
We’ve heard way too much at the hands of a pocket dial – everything from intimate conversations among couples to nasty burps and farts. Remember to lock your phone… the feature’s there for a reason.

9. When you ignore a text or call and get caught.
Few things are as awkward than glancing at an incoming call or text only to ignore it… and then looking up to see your snubbed friend waving at you from across the bar or street. Let’s just say that doing so won’t win you any friend of the year awards any time soon.

10. When your phone rings when you’re pretending to talk on it.
Isn’t it the worst when you pretend to talk on your phone to avoid an awkward run-in or conversation you don’t want to have and then it rings? Ok, maybe that’s just us…

11. When your phone rings in a funeral.
Let’s just say that there is a reason our phone is now always on silent.
