10 Reasons it’s Amazing to be Single in the Summer

We get it; there are many reasons to want to be in a relationship in the summer.

After all, you can participate in couples’ cottage weekends (without being the 11th wheel, that is), take a romantic European vacation, and always have an automatic wedding date.

But if you’re going to be single, it’s actually way better to be so in the summer.

Here are 10 reasons why.

You Can Go on a Spontaneous Road Trip Without Consulting Anyone
Some of the best summer road trips are the spontaneous ones. You know, the kind you agree to on a whim, and pack your weekend bag in five minutes. If you’re in a relationship, it’s not so easy to do so. Not only is the coordination of schedules pretty much impossible – your friends may only have one spot left in the car (oh, the FOMO).
Everyone Looks Better in the Summer
Despite the BBQs, beer, and ice cream, everyone seems to look better in the summer. The kiss of the sun helps that cause, but those ‘hibernation season’ pounds quickly melt away now that we can run, play sports, workout, or even just walk outside. And let’s be honest, being single is always better when you look your best (and when everyone else does too).
Steamy Summer Flings. Period
If you’re single, the possibility of a steamy summer fling should be reason enough to cure your single blues. Think: steamy summer sex, long romantic walks, and all the perks of a relationship without feeling tied down, or taming that wild summer spirit. Need more incentive? Check out these reasons to have a summer fling.
There are More Opportunities to Meet Other Singles
Let’s face it; it’s not so easy to meet fellow singles during the deep, dark depths of winter. You pretty much have two options: online or at the bar. In the summer, however, singles are everywhere – as are opportunities to meet them. This means everything from Sundays in the park, through softball or beach volleyball, at a music festival, or even running errands as the sidewalks finally fill with people again.
Sundays are Less Depressing and Lonely as a Single
The worst part of being single is on Sundays – especially if you’re hungover, had a bad experience the night before, and all of your friends are occupied with their significant others. At least in the summer, the sunshine and warmth alone helps your mood. Meaning, you’ll be less inclined to build yourself your own self-loathing fort of doom in bed and stay there all day. Even if your friends are all busy, you have the option of going for a walk or run to clear your mind. Or – having a Sunday Funday with that new sexy single you met last week.
Fall is the Best Time to Fall in Love and Start a Relationship Anyway
Starting a relationship in the summer (as opposed to a fling) isn’t the easiest, when it seems everyone has their travel plans and their weekends accounted for. The fall, on the other hand, is the best time to start a relationship. From sweaters, crisp walks, and the fact that you’ll have someone locked down come hibernation time, falling in love in the fall is kind of the best. So stay single for the sweleting months and cozy up for the cold ones.
You’ll Get More Bonus Invites to Cottages and Concerts
Between cottages, concerts, festivals, and events, there’s more chance that one of your friends has an extra ticket or ‘plus one’ in the summer. It always sucks to have to pass up a concert ticket because you’ve committed to cooking pizza with your significant other. Sorry, bae, but we want to go.
You Aren’t Obligated to Visit Two Sets of Parents
Not that we don’t love and appreciate our parents (or any potential future in-laws for that matter), but at least if you’re single, you won’t have to factor in weekend-long visits with two sets of parents (or more, if they’re divorced) when it comes to planning the remaining weekends that aren’t occupied with weddings or cottage plans. You’ll have more time in the fall for that.
You Only Have to Attend Half as Many Weddings
Your wallet and precious weekend time is already taking a major hit this summer from the multiple weddings you have. Do you really want to be double tied down with two sets of summer weddings to hit (and outfits to find for all of them)? Exactly.
There are More Options When it Comes to Dating
When it comes to dating (as in, actually going on dates) you have way more options to choose from in the summer than in the winter. Not to mention, ones that won’t break the bank (because breaking the bank on a dead-end date makes it so much worse). Things like outdoor concerts, food and drink festivals, and even a good old-fashioned walk with ice cream break the ice more so than often-awkward across-the-table banter that feels like an interview.
