Vancouver Weekender: May 16 through 19, 2014

Friday

Richmond Night Market opens once again for the season starting this Friday and will be bigger and better with hundreds of local and not-so-local vendors on site. Don’t miss the new Magical Candycastle, retail booths, demo tents, fresh air food court, live entertainment and general buzz that is the night market. Click here for all the details. Things officially kick off for the season starting at 7pm on Friday.

The Marquee Tent that’s recently popped up symbolizes the arrival of Cirque du Soleil’s latest: Totem. Use this Friday as a perfect excuse to be one of the first to check out this awe-inspiring acrobatic show that artfully examines mankind’s relationship with nature. Tickets start at $100, or go all out with the Rouge VIP experience. Learn more here

Relive the 90s and head to the Rio Theatre for a nostalgic screening of Clueless. As per usual, dressing in character will score you $2 off the show, so you’ll have more left over for a beer, buttery popcorn and classic grilled cheese sandwich.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday

GO Fest. Get out of town for the long weekend and head up to Whistler for the inaugural GO Fest, Whistler’s Great Outdoors Festival taking over the mountains and then some. This weekend it’s time to trade in the skis (though you can still squeeze in a few runs) and gear up for some downhill mountain biking as the park reopens for another awesome season. GO Fest celebrates all things outdoors-related complete with demos, free concerts, The Slush Cup, a chance to try out fly fishing, stand-up paddle boarding and a catch some serious sun at the local lakes. Saturday

Feast Tofino (on until May 29th) is definitely a place you might want to consider heading to for the long weekend ahead. It’s a month-long series of culinary celebrations that deliciously showcase all that comes from our local waters. This weekend’s special events include the Dirty Moto X Gourmet that involves a day of back road dirt biking capped by a wild gourmet barbecue in the woods. You can also opt to partake in a casual BBQ seafood feast at Driftwood Cafe Patio and Grille with chill time at Chesterman’s Beach. Get all the details and plan your Tofino escape here: FeastTofino.com.

Saturday, Sunday

Use this weekend to stock up and Eat Local at one of the city’s Farmers Markets. Saturday, head over to Trout Lake Farmers Markets (from 9am until 2pm) or check out Kitsilano’s Farmers Market starting at 10am until 2pm on Sunday.

The Sea to Sky Gondola opens this weekend, and though we suspect it’ll be packed with people trying to score one of the first rides up, you might be one of the lucky few. Check out all the details and be sure to add it to your agenda for the summer.

Monday (Victoria Day)

Cloverdale Rodeo is where you’ll want to head on the holiday (especially if you’re stuck in town and looking for a daytrip). Don’t miss the farm-style fun and games (complete with Bull Riding, Ladies Barrel Racing). Check out the line up of live music, rides and make your way to the Country Fair that features hand-made arts and crafts, cooking, baking and canning competitions, livestock and horticulture displays and plenty more.
