Trending in Vancouver: June 28th, 2011

Trending topics via social media always provide interesting insight into the collective users of a city. We thought it would be interesting to check out what’s trending in Vancouver right now, and give our thoughts on why these might be on Vancouverites’ minds…

#Vancouver
Well…no surprises here. A city name will be trending in that city if only for the joyous RT bots.
Interesting tweet: “@HauteOnMyHeels Where’s The Balcony of the Hollywood Theatre in vancouver? Apparently its a good place to go and makeout lol” > We’re sure it is.

#canucks, #lapierre, #bieksa, @vancanucks
With the announcement of Barry Wilkins’ – noted for scoring the first-ever goal for the 1970 expansion Canucks – passing on Sunday due to complications from lung cancer, and the news that Kevin Bieska just signed a 5-year deal and Maxime Lapierre signed a 2-year, coupled with the aftermath of the playoffs, we’re pretty sure the Canucks will be trending for awhile to come.
Interesting tweet: “@tsnotoole The Canucks farm team is now in Chicago? Isn’t that like the Smurfs sending their kids to school in Gargamel’s basement?” > Of…course…it…is…?

#bachelorette, #thebachelorette, #ashley, and #bentley
We love us some trashy “Reality TV” here in Van. Apparently last night’s ep saw the suitors dropping like flies, and Ashley name-dropping Bentley like Kathy Griffin name drops her Emmy-award winning show. We wouldn’t know, we were too busy watching Top Chef Canada.
Interesting tweet: “@FionaForbes If Bachelorette were a drinking game & u took a shot every time Ashley said ‘Bentley’ we’d be getting our stomachs pumped!” > Instead try a shot every time she says something profound. (Then it becomes a game you can play with non-drinkers.)

#deer
The Black Keys were playing at Deer Lake last night, and the music-lovers of Vancouver showed up in droves.
Interesting tweet: “@_annEmal_ Looks like I’m seeing Black Keys tonight at Deer Lake Park except I have no idea who they are :s. I better get familiar quick.” > Captain Youtube to the rescue!
