These Were the Most Important Moments at the Golden Globes

Last night’s Golden Globes wasn’t just about the #couplegoals (Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds), the ample beards (clearly, the trend isn’t dying any time soon) and Jimmy Fallon’s bad Chris Rock impression.

Some of Hollywood’s most famous faces took the opportunity to offer powerful insight on inclusiveness, female empowerment, empathy and love.

These are the four most important moments at the Golden Globes.

Emma Stone Has a Witty Reaction to Ryan Seacrest’s ‘Dress Question.’

Not only did Emma Stone take home some shiny hardware at last night’s Golden Globe awards, she also had the best answer when asked about her dress.

The actress – who won Best Actress in a Comedy for her role in La La Land – had a simple and straightforward answer to E!’s Ryan Seacrest when he asked her to tell him about her dress.

“Well, it’s pink and there are stars on it,” she said of her stunning Valentino gown (seriously; she was one of the best-dressed there, in our opinion).

Of course, the preoccupation with which designers Hollywood’s leading ladies are wearing on the red carpet is nothing new. In recent years, some of the world’s most famous females have taken a stance against this, calling it sexist and launching 2014’s #AskHerMore campaign. The campaign encouraged reporters to ask more insightful questions about their work and opinions, as opposed to their dresses. Supporters have since brushed off the question on awards show red carpets and refused to place their hands in the E! Network’s mani-cam.

Last night, Evan Rachel Wood hit the red carpet in a suit to show girls that wearing dresses is not a “requirement.”

In her acceptance speech for Best Actress in a TV Comedy for her role of Dr. Rainbow Johnson on Black-ish, first-time nominee Tracee Ellis Ross became the first black actress to win in the category since Debbie Allen took home the title in 1983 for Fame.

Ross dedicated her win to “women of colour and colourful people whose stories, ideas, and thoughts are not always considered worthy and valid and important.”

“I want you to know that I see you,” she said. “We see you.”

She also gave a nod to Hollywood’s ‘age issue’ when it comes to female actresses who are over the age of 40. Ross concluded her speech by saying that the view from the stage at the age of 44 “is not so bad” and declaring, “I like it here.”

Meryl Streep Blasts Donald Trump and Advocates Empathy.

In her acceptance speech for the Cecil B. Demille lifetime achievement award, Meryl Streep highlighted the cultural diversity reflected in Hollywood, making note of the nationalities and backgrounds of some of the world’s most celebrated talent.

“Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners,” she said. “And if you kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts.”

Our favourite part?

“Ryan Gosling, like all the best people, is Canadian,” she said.

Her reference was a direct attack on Donald Trump, who – in addition to his views on foreigners – she also blasted for his famous mockery of a disabled journalist. Not surprisingly, Trump took to Twitter to fight back in typical Trump form, calling Streep “one of the most overrated actress in Hollywood,” offering an example of what not to do on social media and in the workplace.

On the other end of the spectrum, Streep stressed the importance of empathy, concluding with advice from her late friend Carrie Fischer, “Take your broken heart, make it into art.”

Ryan Gosling Showed Mad Love For his Wife Eva Mendes in his Acceptance Speech.

Homegrown hottie Ryan Gosling – who attributes his meme-filled ‘perfect boyfriend status to being Canadian – made us all love him even more in his acceptance speech for winning Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy for his role in La La Land.

That’s because it was all about his wife, Eva Mendes (aka the luckiest woman on the planet). It served as a refreshing reminder of what’s important in life – especially in the face of such insane success.

“While I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I’ve ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer,” said Gosling.

“If she hadn’t taken all that on so that I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else up her other than me today. Sweetheart, thank you,” he continued (tear).

He then dedicated the award to the memory of Mendes’ brother, Juan Carlos.
