Take it Straight: You’ll Want to Be at Our Bourbon Night on March 20th

Let’s see a show of hands for people that like drinking stiff, well-made, artisan cocktails. And let’s see another show of hands for people who are looking for a different way to spend their Thursday night. If this sounds like you, then you need to hurry up and get a ticket to our Bourbon Party happening on March 20th at the Bourbon Room.

Notable is cordially inviting you and your friends to join us for a special evening in one of the most exclusive joints in the city. For one night only you’ll be treated to a creative selection of cocktails poured by a shortlist of savvy bartenders from Calgary and Vancouver. In anticipation of the event, we thought it would be fun to introduce a few of the gents who will be mixing up their favourite Bulleit Bourbon recipes for guests.

Meet Joel Virginillo
Joel is a reserve brand consultant for Diageo and is coming all the way from Vancouver to share his passion for bourbon with the Calgary YP crowd. During his career, Joel has trained over 6000 young bartenders how to serve patrons a proper drink. His travels through the markets of Paris, the bars of London, and the cities of the Middle East all inspire his craft behind the wood.

How long have you been bartending?
13 years.

What’s your drink of choice?
What day is it?

What are your favourite ingredients to work with when making cocktails?
Anything fresh but I’m really into Amaros (a herb liqueur) right now.

What’s your favourite place to spend your nights off?
Anywhere but a bar.

What will you be pouring at the bourbon party?
Smoked Praline Sours.

We can’t give away the recipe for Smoked Praline Sours until the event, but we can tell you they include smoked pecan bitters, vanilla and pralines.

Words to live by?
“When life gives you lemon, add Bourbon!”

Meet Stephen Phipps

Affectionately known as “Hound Dog” to many YPs who have sat at his bar, Stephen is one of the local authorities on mixology, especially when it comes to bourbon. Phipps has a real knack when it comes to creating colourful cocktail lists that you’ve probably sampled if you’ve ever been to the National, Model Milk or the Bourbon Room.

How long have you been bartending?
15 years.

What’s your drink of choice?
I’m a simple man with a love for a good old White Russian made with a strong coffee and a big dollop of cream. You can find these in the National bowling alley.

What are your favourite ingredients to work with when making cocktails?
Fresh fruit. I love making drinks like the Pear and Pistol and Beet Lemonade. I also like working with beer as the star ingredient.

What’s your favourite place to spend your nights off?
Definitely Pizza Bob’s.

What will you be pouring at the bourbon party?
The Brown Derby, an obscure classic that everyone will love. It’s the ideal choice if you’re trying to start your night in a hurry or alternatively if you’re feeling a little foggy after a big night out and need something to revive you.  It’s sweet, refreshing and boozy.

Words to live by?
Peaks and valleys.

Seriously, you don’t want to miss out on this event. Tell all your friends that you’re spending next Thursday with cocktails, comfort food and good company. Get your tickets today and let’s start thinking about how great it will be to start the weekend early.

See you at the Bourbon Room!
