Over 40,000 People Have Signed a Petition to Remove Kanye West From the Pan Am Games Lineup

Kanye West, the biggest musician artist ego in the world, was recently announced as the closing act for the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto.

Many people freaked out. One of Canada’s most recognized music journalists even went as far as to call him an asshole and his wife a skank.

Yesterday, online rage took the next logical step: a petition.

The Change.org petition calls for Yeezus to be removed as the Pan Am Games’ closing headliner and replaced by a Canadian artist.

“The Toronto Pan Am games have proven to be very important for Torontonians this year and have triggered a unified sense of pride in our city,” it states. “The options for Toronto artists are far from limited and choosing someone like Kanye West raises several concerns among the people. Why was a local artist or group not chosen and supported, just as our local athletes are throughout the games?”

Over 40,000 people have backed the movement so far, which is nearing the 50,000+ signatures a similar petition to keep Kanye from performing at the U.K.’s Glastonbury festival gathered earlier this year.

Kanye: The People’s Champion

No matter how many supporters will back the effort, the head of the Games organizing committee, Saad Rafi, said it’s too late to change the lineup.

“Let’s not forget, these are the Pan American Games, which include the Americas and the Caribbean. It’s highly appropriate to have artists from those countries of origin,” he said.

We eagerly await Kanye’s on-stage response to the chaos.
