Notable Escape: Whistler

It might be the shoulder season on the slopes (the mountain officially opens November 24th!), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of reasons to ditch the city for a weekend escape to one of the world’s premiere ski, snowboard and outdoor activity destinations: Whistler Blackcomb.

Aside from the fact that this stunningly picturesque valley locale is chock-full of breath-taking natural sights, even in the pause between seasons there are deals to be found and adventures to be had that we think you ought to note.

Stay
The Westin Whistler is our mountainside spot to hunker down for a few days of respite and relaxation steps from all the Village action. This stunning, conveniently-located luxury hotel boasts all the amenities (and then some) a city rat could ask for, with great rates to boost (from $169/night).

Aside from galleries featuring local and international artists, their signature Avello Spa and Health Club, not to mention the cozy Aubergine Grille (featuring locally sourced, sustainable, multi-course culinary treats from $20), we think their spaciously appointed guest rooms are simply the icing on the cake.

Do
We recommend you take in the tail-end of fall’s gorgeous colours and head over to the Scandinave Spa for a full-on submersion into tranquility. This serene spa with a view offers everything meant to lend you a complete state of relaxation. Park your car (or, as we’ve done, bike) and meander along the path that lands you at the main house reception. From there, it’s up to you. Opt for a customized massage treatment, thumb through a book, or enjoy the traditional Scandinavian Spa experience at your own pace. Simply put, this stop is indeed a notable way to stop the clock for a few hours. Find out more by visiting them online and reserve your spot.

Go
So this in-between-season conundrum can have those craving an active escape chomping at the bit. Fear not, Whistler Blackcomb easily takes care of that, too. With a plethora of paths, trails and gruelling treks (and bears heading back towards their dens in time for winter) there are plenty of options certain to exhaust those sweat-seekers.

Slogging it up a mountain not quite your thing? How about renting bikes and taking a cruise along the extensive Valley Trails or gliding through treetop canopies and tricked-out terrain with ZipTrek Ecotours to boost that adrenaline?

Eat
There are so many spots to note here…Whistler Village is buzzing with culinary mayhem certain to suit every craving. Start with brunch at Elements Tapas Bar or Aubergine Grille and move on to The Brew House, nab some patio time at either The Longhorn Saloon & Grill or land at the GLC (as the locals call it). Dinner options are seemingly endless as well. Go high-end and grab a seat at the ice bar at Bearfoot Bistro for starters, where oysters, champagne and notoriously great nights often find their beginnings. After knocking back a few bevvies, we suggest you stroll over to Ric’s Grill or The Mix, or make your way to Creekside and make room for Creekbread Pizza.

Not up for decision-making? Be sure to check in with the Concierge at the Westin or opt for a Whistler Tasting Tour instead and leave the details up to someone else.

Whatever your Whistler weekend getaway fix, you’ll find it here.

Note this: If you’re mulling over an excuse to get thee to this mountain-based town, we strongly suggest you take a peek at this year’s schedule for the food and wine extravaganza that is Cornucopia (celebrating its 15th year) and start planning. We’ll have more details to come, just sayin’ – you should be there.
