“Honour killings” are a form of violence against women that take the lives of 5,000 girls/women every year. They are committed with the motive of protecting or regaining the honour of the perpetrator, family, or community.
Banaz: A Love Story is a 2012 film by Deeyah Khan that chronicles an act of overwhelming horror – the honour killing of Banaz Mahmod, a young British woman in suburban London in 2006, killed and “disappeared” by her own family.
Following the documentary, there will be a panel discussion that will shed light on honour killings in Canada. Speakers on the panel are subject matter experts that have experience researching, working, or servicing victims affected by this type of violence.
It promises to be an enlightening and touching evening.
