Neighbourhood Spotlight: South Granville

We love an excuse to explore the veritably different neighbourhoods in and around Vancouver…especially those as abuzz with activity (and excuses to start our holiday shopping early) as South Granville. Here’s our varied list of notable spots to check out when you venture over the bridge and happily wander between 7th and 16th Avenue.

Peridot, located at 1510 W 14th Ave., offers a colourfully chic assortment of household furnishings and edgy items from little-known lines and designs sourced from around the globe – all perfectly placed in a cozy ‘nook’ of a boutique.

Bau-Xi Gallery, one of Vancouver’s older galleries (officially opened in 1965), offers the perfect escape for art aficionados and window shoppers alike. It is conveniently located just steps away from the street level bustle and currently features the hauntingly stunning works of Tracey Tarling. See for yourself by visiting the gallery at 3045 Granville Street.

Anthropologie (pictured above) opened this past summer to much anticipation amongst YVR’s shopping elite, and we’ve been guilty ourselves of the occasional splurge. As is the case with pretty much any Anthropologie we’ve visited, we suggest hitting up the sales section upstairs for some serious deals, but be sure to take your time perusing all the goods showcased at this massive, multi-floored store located at 2912 Granville Street.

COP (Clothing of the People) is one of our faves when looking to score some seriously swanky additions to our YP wardrobe. You won’t find all your generic brands here. Rather, you’ll likely discover a plethora of pieces from lesser-known and hard to find labels (Joie, Black Orchid) that pack a stylish punch. See it all at 3050 Granville Street.

Caffe Barney (2975 Granville Street) is our long-time, post-shop go-to.  Whether it’s for a quick beer and a bite – or a few glasses of vino with your crew – we love this cozy spot for its unpretentious service and atmosphere (not to mention great prices!)

UGG (yeah, that slipper-like pull-on boot from OZ) has recently set up a permanent shop at 2633 Granville Street next door (ironically?) to DKNY. You’ll find all your sheared goodness and more, so we’re told. Let’s be honest: We love a pair of UGGs at this time of year and, on the wet coast, who doesn’t?

Homewerx recently set up shop at its second location on South Granville (2928 Granville Street). Always one of our must-stops when searching for all things home decor, this is sure to become a South Granville favourite for foodies and avid home entertainers alike. We think Homewerx may just have the answer for those hard-to-buy-for people on your holiday list.

Meinhardt Fine Foods is where locals head to for what could be called “designer grub.” We love making our way through this gorgeous haute cuisine grocer, which may stock the largest array of imported olive oils we’ve come across (with a wide range of prices to match). Not feeling like a formal sit-down snack? Easy. Head next door to their cafe for a quick pick-me-up. Find them both at 3002 Granville Street.
