Loblaws Employees are Being Forced to Pay Back Thousands After Payment Error

What would you do if your boss asked for money back that they’d already given you?

Well, that’s exactly what’s happening to some Loblaws employees in Surrey, B.C.

Employees at Your Independent Grocer aren’t too happy after being told they owe tens of thousands of dollars after a payment error that resulted in mistaken overpayments.

About 20 employees at the franchise store opted for a one-time lump sum compensation payment in exchange for agreeing to new limits on their wages and benefits. At the time, it was an attractive offer to employees, who figured that the amount would cover them for a substantial period of time.

Many transferred the money into RRSPs, others paid off their university tuition costs.

Now, the grocery store giant is demanding that the employees repay immediately – and are even threatening legal action. For some employees, this means asking for as much as 14 weeks’ pay back.

If having to pay for the company’s mistake isn’t bad enough, the employees have been given just weeks to cough up the cash.

Not surprisingly, the employees are demanding that Loblaws drop their demand and apologize.

As for Loblaws, they’re not backing down.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this one plays out…
