How to Dress for the Holidays Without Looking Like a Walking Ornament

The first snowfall has hit (in Montreal, at least) and it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Holiday season is officially amongst us. Between gift shopping, baking and decorating, I feel like I am always left stumbling at the last minute to look festive for the holiday parties I need to attend.  Of course, there’s an easy way out of every predicament; you can wear an actual holiday sweater complete with Rudolph and Frosty, you can dress in red or take the sequined route.

For those of us that want to be a little more fashionable, my holiday tips won’t have you reverting to any of the obvious ideas and you’ll be sure to look (and feel) ready to take on the holidays.

Accessorize
The biggest accessory trend of the season is a long dangling earring. You only really need one great pair as you can wear the same earrings with different outfits to cater any event. Wear your favourite LBD for a fancier feel or a cozy sweater for a more laid back event (think at home get together). Pull back your hair, add some lipstick and voilà!

Makeup
This is probably the simplest way to vamp up your look for the holiday season. Try a gold eyeshadow or some glitter for an added touch. A little sparkle goes a long way.

Colour and texture
Red is the obvious colour of choice for this season with burgundy being a close contender. But why not try a dusty rose knit or a champagne sateen blouse for a fresh look. Adding texture is another way to feel merry. Cashmere, silk and (faux) fur are all perfect holiday fabrics to add to an outfit.

Velvet
If you want to invest in a holiday piece, I suggest your new purchase be velvet. As one of the biggest trends of the season, you’ll be able to work the item into your wardrobe throughout the rest of winter. Velvet leggings are a great addition to any closet and can be dressed up with a silk cami and blazer or down with an oversize sweater.

For the men
In my opinion, men have it easy when it comes to fashion. It doesn’t take much to look good and the holiday season is no exception. Pair a sweater with a shawl collar for an instant elevation to a pair of jeans or a cable knit sweater with skinny trousers. Stick to deep and saturated colors: navy, dark green and charcoal are all great options. If you’re more of the adventurous type, invest in a velvet blazer which will become the perfect accessory to any outfit.
