The Ultimate LGBTQ Travel Guide to Pride in Greece

This summer, LGBTQ+ revellers can celebrate with the ultimate Pride vacation in Greece. There are four gay pride parades held in Greece annually; in Athens, Thessalonica, Patras and Heraklion the capital of the island of Crete, and one group tour will get you to all of them.

Contiki Tours is offering two new tours catering specifically to young LGBTQ+ jet-setters who dream of journeying through Greece to celebrate Pride events in Athens and Mykonos. The two limited-time exclusive tours will be based off of the uber popular ‘Greek Week’ trip that runs over nine days, travelling around Athens, Ios and Mykonos, but with the inclusions of added Pride activities.

Gay, straight, don’t know, don’t care…all are welcome to travel on the new ‘Greek Week Pride’ trips. The plans are to explore Athen’s gay district of Gazi and dive into the city’s Pride festival on the ‘Greek Week, Athens Pride’ trip, and frolic in the sun on Mykonos and go crazy at XLSIOR Mykonos festival in the ‘Greek Week, Mykonos Pride’.

Greece is considered to be one of the most liberal countries in southeast Europe. Same-sex sex has been legal since 1951 though same-sex unions were only legalized in 2015. Same-sex partnerships are upheld for most of the same rights — but not all — as opposite-sex unions by law.

As racist, bigoted, and right-wing movements are on the rise on both sides of the Atlantic these days, gay travellers in Europe may feel a sense of security in group travel.
