Finally: Beer is For Sale at Select Ontario Supermarkets TODAY

Select Ontario supermarkets will begin stocking their shelves with six-packs of beer, just in time for the busy holiday season.

Premier Kathleen Wynn will announce the sale of beer at a number of  Ontario locations this morning at a Toronto Loblaws (in Leslieville).

It is expected that there will be around 60 locations around the province authorized to sell beer by the year’s end. This is the first time beer has ever been sold in supermarkets and it marks the biggest change to booze retailing in Ontario for generations.

Reports say in the first roll out, 25 retailers will be able to sell beer in the Greater Toronto Area, while 16 more in southwestern Ontario, 13 in eastern Ontario, and six in northern Ontario will also get the go ahead.

This fall, the province’s Liberal Government managed to secure a deal that would allow the maximum of 450 supermarkets to sell strictly six packs.

There will be a 10-year agreement between Ontario and the foreign brewing companies that own The Beer Store. One that allows The Beer Store to keep the exclusive right to sell 24-packs and most 12-packs in Ontario, which will continue to protect most of The Beer Store’s lucrative private monopoly.

Expected Retailers:
– Loblaws
– Walmart
– Sobeys
– Metro

Independent Retailers:
– Farm Boy
– Galleria Supermarket
– Hanahreuem Mart
– La Mantia’s Country Market
– Longo’s
– Michael-Angelos Market Place
– Pino’s Get Fresh
– Starsky Fine Foods

By spring 2017, there will be 150 Ontario supermarkets selling six packs of cold ones, which will eventually rise to the maximum of 450 grocery stores.

While this is great for anyone needing to run out and grab a quick case of beer over the Christmas break, wine drinkers looking to buy a quick bottle of vino while grabbing some last minute groceries will simply be out of luck.

As of right now, there are no finalized plans to get wine sold alongside beer at these select locations.
