Event Recap: motionball Calgary Gala 2014

On Friday, February 28th, Calgary’s young professionals escaped the city’s frigid temperatures outside to attend the motionball Gala, one of the hottest and most anticipated charity affairs of the year. The gala is one of several annual events organized by motionball to raise funds for the Special Olympics Canada Foundation (SOCF).

Guests arrived at Flames Central dressed to impress in their most colourful attire in support of this year’s theme, Brighter. The event kicked off with an intimate VIP sponsor session during which Calgary YPs were treated to fabulous eats, glasses of bubbly and speeches from several special Olympians.

At 9pm, the doors were open to the rest of the crowd and the party hit full swing. First up was the exclusive Swimco fashion show presenting the best in beach trends for the upcoming summer season.

The stage was then lit up with a bold performance by dance troupe ILLFX, whose members are best recognized from Canada’s ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ series. The fashion show and electric dance troupe were followed by an epic performance by the one-and-only DJ Skratch Bastid, who had the crowd going wild. Between enjoying the host bar and phenomenal entertainment, attendees were invited to bid on the fabulous selection of silent auction items.

Through events like Friday’s gala, the goal of motionball is to “target the next generation of supporters” through social and sporting events that help raise awareness and funds for the SOCF. This year’s Brighter Gala exceeded all expectations, raising sixty thousand dollars to help our Special Olympians reach their goals.

For YPs who were not able to attend the gala, there is still another chance to show your support at the Marathon of Sport, taking place on June 7th. The marathon is sure to be another notable event of 2014 and will include a fun-filled day of sporting events with special needs athletes.
