Air Canada Will Soon Offer High-Speed Wi-Fi on All Its International Flights

For anyone that’s travelled internationally with Air Canada before, you understand how frustrating it is to not always have access to inflight entertainment services.

You feel bored, anxious, and often you’re forced to strike up conversations with the person sitting next to you just to pass the time. (The horror.)

But starting this fall, Air Canada will begin installing Gogo 2Ku satellite technology on its entire wide-body aircraft fleet, allowing passengers to check e-mails, surf the web, and stream entertainment at broadband speeds while flying anywhere in the world — never being forced to carry on awkward chitchat with the stranger next to you again.

Gogo 2Ku satellite services promise faster speeds, reliable connections, and adequate capacity for all users. Passengers would be able to stream content from providers like Netflix or HBO, live broadcasts via Gogo’s TV service — so you’ll never have to miss a big game.

“Air Canada is pleased to announce it will offer customers the ability to stay connected whenever and wherever they fly by extending inflight, North American connectivity to its wide-body aircraft flying overseas using satellite technology,” says Benjamin Smith, president of passenger airlines at Air Canada.

On all flights offering Gogo, the plane will be using two large antennas (2Ku), which will allow the plane to receive double the bandwidth from space, offering up to 70Mbps in total download capacity.

“While business travellers will welcome satellite Wi-Fi service as a productivity tool, it will have widespread appeal for all travellers by allowing them to stay in touch, access the Internet and enjoy additional entertainment options throughout their entire journey,” says Smith.

With this new feature becoming available later this year, be prepared to start seeing a lot more friends updating their social media statuses to, “I’m posting this from the plane!”
