A Horse Slipping Incident in Montreal Urges for the Ban of Caleche Rides

After a photograph of a distressed caleche horse that slipped on a metal plate and fell repeatedly before getting up surfaced in Montreal today, it didn’t take long for social media to voice its outrage.

Now, a petition is going around that seeks to finally ban caleche rides in our city – a goal the Anti-Caleche Defense Coalition has had on its agenda for years.

If New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to caleches banned by 2016, there’s no reason we can’t follow suit.

Consistent exposure to hard pavement is damaging to horses’ legs and feet, requiring pain medication and evoking the possibility of permanent damage. Not to mention their work is carried out in 30-degree heat on some summer days.

The Anti-Caleche Defense Coalition sums up the issue by saying “18th century carriages do not belong in a 21st century congested city where there are accidents and emergencies of all kinds.”

So far there has been no word from the city concerning the incident or a possible ban.
